Karachi Metropolitan University Dream and Realization

Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that the dream of Karachi Metropolitan University was envisioned by the people of Karachi, and the Pakistan People’s Party promised to make it a reality. He emphasized on their fulfilling this promise as they granted Karachi Medical and Dental College university status. Furthermore, all issues related to this university will be resolved soon after achieving its independence from KMC in November 2021 following the PPP government’s restructuring of provincial education system.

  • Murtaza Wahab spoke at a ceremony for awarding scholarships where he highlighted that today’s event is dedicated to Iqbal Day, commemorating Allama Iqbal who dreamt about an independent nation and when given the opportunity led KMC as its first mayor. Students of Karachi Metropolitan University approached him years ago with a request for their college’s university status – something he acknowledges was not conceived in 2021 but rather is a product of long-term dedication from his administration and supportive PPP government, leading to the achievement.

“The dream [of Karachi Medical & Dental College becoming independent] has come true as we made this university status official today,” Murtaza Wahab commented on behalf of both parties at a press conference in November 2021, after which he emphasized that it was the PPP’s government restructuring and funding for education initiatives like Karachi Medical & Dental College’s independence from KMC following their own establishment as an educational institution. The Vice Chancellor of Karachi Metropolitan University, Dr Wasim Qazi, expressed his happiness at welcoming Mayor Wahab to the university during a formal ceremony where he presented awards for academic excellence and best-in-class performance in various disciplines that were held earlier on November 17th.

“Former Prime Minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto established Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, but we have not been able to operate it effectively.”

  • Mayor Wahab urged the teachers and students of Karachi Metropolitan University (KMC) towards ownership in improving their institution.

– The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Wasim Qazi, shared his joy with Mayor Murtaza Wahab on welcoming him to KMC during a formal ceremony where he was honored for securing university status and plans of establishing nursing college at the same institution.

  • Mayor Wahab is also planning establishment of girls’ common room named after Mayor Murtaza’s late mother, Fauzia Wahab – a move expected to be announced soon.

– The memorandum of understanding (MoU) will include construction plans for an international level gymnasium within KMC premises where students from the university and affiliated colleges can engage in physical fitness activities.
