Founder and Director of Climate Action Centre (CAC) Karachi Yasir Hussain’s Statement on Air Pollution Combat Strategies
A comprehensive approach is essential to combat air pollution effectively.
- Transitioning to electric vehicles, shifting to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.
- Enforcing strict emission standards for industries based on the 2014 Act regulations.
Yasir Hussain further emphasized that: “the air we breathe is a toxic mix of pollutants, with vehicle emissions being a primary culprit.” He highlighted how petrol exhaust contributes to smog by releasing harmful gases and particles, resulting in dark soot coating our buildings and roads.
These fine particles penetrate our lungs and bloodstream, increasing risks of cancer, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular issues, while severely damaging the overall quality of life for citizens across Pakistan’s cities like Karachi. Hussain advocated that bold measures are needed to tackle these root causes effectively and secure a healthier future for all inhabitants within our metropolises.
Remember that Yasir Hussain called upon establishing car-free urban zones dedicated exclusively to electric transportation modes such as buses, trams, and bicycles – which he believes can significantly mitigate emissions while promoting healthier lifestyles within the city.
Hussain further stressed that alongside transitioning towards renewable energy sources: “strict enforcement of emission standards set by [the] 2014 Act” and a critical reform in regulatory bodies, specifically referencing Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), are necessary steps to ensure compliance within industry sectors.
