Children kidnapping gang arrested in Karachi
Children are often referred to as the future of any nation. Their safety and protection is a responsibility we all share, especially when it comes from our own families or communities [1]. Unfortunately, child abductions still occur across Pakistan with some being more severe than others – one such case was reported yesterday in Karachi where 3 suspects were caught after stealing two children for ransom.
According to an officer of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is looking into cases involving missing minors, “the three accused individuals abducted a boy and his sister from their respective homes on March 26th by stopping them in front of FB Area where they would regularly pick up students.”
The suspects then made off with the phone belonging to one parent. The children were forced into an underground room for interrogation until money was provided as ransom [3]. However, Karachi police are hopeful that this recent arrest will put a halt in such criminal activities and send strong signals against them taking place within society.[4]
“The suspects confessed to kidnapping the two children from their homes,” said Assistant Commissioner for Crime Branch AKM Farhan Ali Khan during press conference yesterday. He went on adding that they also revealed details about where exactly these atrocities were being committed along with names of other gang members who would be a part of such heinous acts.[4]
The three suspects have been identified as Amir Abbas (38), Hussain Iqbal, and Shakeel Khan. The latter is already facing charges under the Illegal Arms Act for having illegal weapons in his possession which were allegedly used against police during their arrest last week.[5]
A statement issued by Superintendent of Karachi Police Aamir Mehmood Warra says that these criminals will be charged and brought to justice before courts. He appealed the public not to make similar attempts when faced with criminal activities like this in future which could lead them into dangerous situations [4]. “We are continuously working on cases involving missing minors,” Superintendent said as he added further details about another case reported earlier where 7-year old Sarim went missing after failing his morning school attendance routine back home at Jumaah Mosque in Bahria Colony – an area which has seen a rise number of abduction incidents over recent years.[4]
“The family is very worried about their son and hopeful that he will return soon,” said Sarim’s father Bashir, who had gone out for supper during the time his child went missing. He told media today how strangers approached him with demands to send Rs 15 million as ransom but fortunately police arrived just in time and recovered their son unharmed [2].
This is not an isolated incident, according to SIT officers who have been investigating such criminal cases since last summer when they started getting serious complaints regarding child abductions. “It’s our priority now as we believe this has become a growing concern for people across Karachi and the nation,” said Assistant Commissioner Farhan Ali Khan [3]. The SIT team is working tirelessly towards bringing these criminals to justice, ensuring that no family goes through such horrific experiences ever again.
