Commissioner Karachi’s Visit Highlights Traffic Issues in City Districts

  • Commisioner Syed Hassan Naqvi accompanied by DIG Traffic and Deputy Commissioners Ahmed Nawaz Cheema on Friday visited different districts of the city including Korangi East, Central, as well as Korangi West. These regions are known for their bustling activities with a constant flow of pedestrians.

In summary:

  • The visit included discussions about traffic problems that affect both walkers and drivers in various parts of the city such as Korangi East, Central, and Korangi West.
  • “The DIG Traffic and Deputy Commissioners briefed him on measures being taken to address these issues.”
  • The focus was particularly drawn towards traffic management at major intersections where there is a frequent rush of people shopping. For instance: “Liaqatabad No.10, Alkaram Bus Stop and the busy intersection near Saharab Goth were highlighted for their significance in managing citywide movement.”
  • The Commissioner observed not only congestion but also disciplinary issues among drivers, especially concerning Mazda vehicles as well as those operating rickshaws.
  • He noted problems with illegal intercity bus stops at Alkaram that contravene existing bans and called for their immediate closure: “Bus ticket booking offices which facilitate unauthorized parking of these buses are also a concern.”
  • The Commissioner has directed measures to eliminate such violations. He insisted on stringent penalties, stating, “It was decided that any bus found standing there would be impounded and handed over to the traffic police.”
  • A priority action plan involving Deputy Commissioners Masood Bhutto of Korangi East/West, Shahzad Abbasi for East Central areas, and Taha Saleem from Centrally was given importance by him. This collaborative effort aims at addressing localized traffic congestion issues: “The need to alleviate the pressure on major thoroughfares such as Liaqatabad No. 10 is pressing.”
  • Effective measures against illegal parking of buses, other vehicles and rickshaws were emphasized alongside shutting down any unauthorized intercity bus ticket booking offices within the city’s jurisdiction: “It was insisted to eliminate these factors contributing to congestion around Liaqatabad No. 10.”
  • The Commissioner stressed on enforcing existing bans, instructing Deputy Commissioners of Central District and Taha Saleem specifically for improvement in traffic conditions: “Ensure strict adherence to rules against illegal stands within the city limits at Saharab Goth Chowrangi.”
  • The visit concluded with a review on general highway congestion, intersections near Korangi East and West as well as around Saharab Ghop intersection. Despite continuous warnings, some bus owners have not ceased operating their vehicles illegally in the region surrounding Saharab Goth Chowrangi.
  • “The Commissioner directed immediate action to curb such illegal operations.”
  • Furthermore, during his visit to these busy spots, he observed that traffic congestion and intersections are particularly problematic due to not only vehicular activities but also the influx of shoppers. For example: “Liaqatabad No.10 is a major thoroughfare in Karachi which often sees heavy vehicle load during peak shopping hours.”
  • Lastly, he has asked for enhanced enforcement from DIG Traffic across all city areas to ensure no buses operate within the prohibited zones of Saharab Goth Chowrangi or anywhere else: “The Commissioner called upon rigorous monitoring and control over intercity operations in Karachi.”
