Five Children Suffer Serious Injuries Due to Dog Attack in Manghopir Area

In Karachi, five children sustained serious injuries on their faces and heads after a stray dog attacked them.

Sources indicated that the incident occurred last Friday. The injured children’s parents were unable to access life-saving treatment at the government hospital due to non-availability of resources.

The affected children, aged between four and six years old, arrived at the Sindh Government Qatar Hospital on Friday evening with critical injuries that required immediate administration of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG).

Officials say dog bite victims could not receive life-saving treatment at Orangi’s Qatar Hospital and were referred to CHK.

The hospital staff cleaned the children’s wounds with a disinfectant before advising the parents to take them to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). They also stated that they have an adequate supply of anti-rabies vaccines but emphasized the necessity for immediate protection offered by RIG.

The children had multiple injuries, and some may require reconstructive surgery. Contrary to reports, CHK officials denied receiving cases from the Manghopir area involving five children.

Dr Liaquat Ali Halo, Additional Medical Superintendent at CHK, mentioned an increase in dog-bite cases recently. Rabies remains underreported as many hospitayer don’t maintain data and patients may not receive timely treatment due to various reasons. Karachi reports between 150 to 300 daily dog bite incidents.
