Govt approves plan for 8,000 electric buses in Karachi

In a major step toward environmentally friendly public transport, the Sindh government approved a proposal on Thursday to introduce 8,000 electric buses (e-buses) in Karachi. The plan, submitted by the National Energy & Transport Corporation (NETC), will be executed in three phases over four years.

First Phase Deployment of 1,500 e-buses: A Leap Towards a Greener Future (Quote)

In Karachi’s first year alone, an initial fleet comprising 1,500 electric buses will be operational. This significant deployment marks the city’s commitment to curtailing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable transit solutions. – Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah

Phase-wise Introduction of 4,000 e-buses

The second phase anticipates an additional rollout of 4,000 electric buses. By the concluding stage, a substantial number ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 electric buses will be fully integrated into Karachi’s public transport system – ensuring consistent growth and improvement in air quality over time.

Setting up of EV Charging Stations

To bolster the transition towards a greener transit ecosystem within Pakistan, NETC plans to set up Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations alongside bus depots and dedicated terminals for electric vehicles across various points in Karachi. This infrastructural development is expected to propel consumer confidence in adopting clean energy transportation modes such as the e-bus.*

Solar Energy Plant Development

Furthermore, an ambitious project includes developing a solar power plant that has the potential of generating up to one gigawatt (GW) by the end of Phase 3. This initiative not only underlines Pakistan’s energy diversification strategies but also solidifies its resolve towards reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources for public transportation.*
