Mayor Karachi Sets Fixed Burial Fees at Registered Cemeteries

Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has announced that fixed rates for burials in the controlled cemeteries of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) have commenced, as per a statement issued on Thursday. The standard fee is now set to Rs 14,300—covering land costs and various related tasks like grave digging, brick laying, slab installation, etc., barring the funeral expenses of those attending their departed loved ones’ burial processions at KMC cemeteries.

Notices displaying these fixed rates have been affixed in all relevant places across city cemeteries for public awareness and adherence to set prices, according to Wahab: “Citizs are urged not to pay amounts beyond the stated fee of Rs 14,300. Any person collecting more than this amount can be reported via 1339,” he said.

He stressed on ensuring strict compliance with these orders by instructing KMC Cemetery Director Mujahid Ali Khan to visit all cemeteries and ensure adherence: “Everyone working in the KMC-registered cemeteries now abides strictly by our rules. Anyone not following them will be held accountable.”

The Mayor also brought up actions against mafia entities involved with grave destruction, ensuring no person could work without proper registration and violations would invite punitive action as per the KMC guidelines: “All individuals working in these cemeteries must possess valid registrations under our rules. If not, we’ll take strict actions against them.”

The Mayor highlighted that providing municipal services to citizens is a fundamental responsibility of civic institutions and urged people living with grief over the loss of their loved ones due to deaths: “This action towards fixed rates for burial expenses will certainly help ease this heavy financial load on our bereaved families. The KMC endeavours not only in infrastructural development but also providing citizens convenience during these difficult times.”

He urged people experiencing difficulties or needing assistance regarding the burial of their loved ones to report via 1339, promising immediate help and support from dedicated staff members: “I encourage our residents facing any problems related with this matter to contact us at 1339. We’re here for you in your times of need.”

The Mayor further stated that the established by-laws aiming towards effective management within KMC cemeteries will not compromise on these issues and expects everyone involved, including citizens and municipal staff members: “With our newly implemented rules and regulations under the burial fee system in place for now, I assure you of my commitment to this matter. We won’t let anything hinder its effectiveness or integrity.”
