Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced a series of protest sit-ins at 10 different locations across Karachi for Sunday, following the Sindh government's suppression of their previous protest with tear gas and baton charges.
JI Karachi Chief Munem Zafar declared, "The JI’s struggle will not be stopped." He accused the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of "fascism" and alleged the use of expired tear gas shells against protesters.
Zafar further emphasized that the PPP is neglecting the people's rights, stating, "Those who live off our taxes are the ones throwing shells at us." He called for a powerful local government system and the fundamental right to safety for Karachiites.
He highlighted the solidarity of the city behind JI, noting that while some businesses on Burns Road remained open, provincial minister Sharjeel Memon had turned the entire city into a "no-go area."
Over a dozen citizens and JI activists were injured during the police shelling and baton charge. Zafar concluded by affirming that despite attempts to stop them, the protest would proceed as planned.
